New Menu Items, Nickel Wet Hop Beers and Octoberfest!

Hello West Coast Fans,

We have added a bunch of delicious new menu items at West Coast including Appetizers, Tortas, Sandwiches, Salads and Burgers.  You can see a picture of the new menu items on our giant back chalkboard on the Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/WestCoastBarbecueBrew/photos/a.144069992393106.30609.138469802953125/1172008889599206/?type=3&theater.

These new items are available all of the time now.  Treat yourself to one of the new items next time you stop in.

On the beer front we are tapping kegs of wet hopped beers from Nickel Beer Company this week.  These beers are all made with locally grown hops from San Diego that are harvested the same day that they are brewed with.  These fresh hops still have a lot of water weight, hence the term “wet hop”.  The My Way Wet Hop IPA with Cascade and Chinook hops is already on tap and Thursday night we tap Green Truck Wet Hop Double IPA made with 100% Columbus hops.

Friday night we will be tapping Buffalo Paw Brown Ale which is an easy drinking brown ale that is only 3.7% alcohol.  It will pair perfectly with our signature Smoked Prime Rib dinner.  Saturday we will tap our 4th and final Nickel wet hop beer – Golden Nugget Wet Hop IPA, which was made with Nugget hops and it is 6.2% alcohol.

Looking Ahead

Next week we will have a Keep the Pint Night featuring Knee Deep’s Deez Hops IPA on Thursday the 28th.  That weekend we will be tapping some Octoberfest lagers including one from Eppig Brewing.

The following week we will have an evening of Mike Hess Brewing beers on Thursday, October 5th.  We are already working on our events for San Diego Beer Week which will kick off Friday, November 3rd.  We are working on events with Societe, Sierra Nevada and Kern River among others.

Smoked Prime Rib All Weekend for Dad!

Hello West Coast Fans,

I’ve got some great new food specials to tell you, updated tap lists along with some expanded hours coming in July.  But the big news this week is that we will be doing Smoked Prime Rib ALL WEEKEND in honor of Father’s Day.  We will begin serving it for dinner at 5 pm Friday and then have it available all day Saturday and all day on Sunday from open to close.  That way you can stop by anytime for a fantastic meal paired up with incredible craft beer.  And we will still be doing our Smoke Prime Rib French Dip on Saturday in addition to the dinner plates all day.  We are now open till 9 pm on Sundays giving you more hour to enjoy a great beer and/or food.

Tonight we start off our weekend tap takeover with Pariah Brewing Company.  We’ll have 5 beers on tap including Clearly Juicy Double IPA, Dorcha EX Stout (brewed with molasses, cocoa nibs and coffee), Dank Drank IPA and Erotic Night (Belgian Quad Style brewed for the Pink Boots society of women brewers).  Look for all of the beers to be on tap today by 4 pm and through the weekend.

Looking Ahead

Next Wednesday, June 21st we will be debuting a new weekly special – Specialty Mac n’ Cheese.  Every Wednesday night we’ll have a different version of our house Mac n’ Cheese on offer.  We tried a Birthday Bacon Mac n’ Cheese last week and it helped inspire this idea.  So not only do you get All Day Happy Hour every Wednesday, you also get awesome Mac n’ Cheese.

At the end of the month we’ll be doing a Societe Brewing weekend that will kick off on Thursday the 29th and feature lots of pub favorites.  We’ll be featuring local boys Helix Brewing the following Thursday right after July 4th.

Speaking of July 4th, we will be CLOSED for the holiday on that Tuesday.  However, we will be open at 11:30 am on Monday, July 3rd as we kick off our new Monday lunch service.  Starting on the 3rd we will be open every day for lunch at 11:30 am.  We will be running our very popular $3 Taco special all day on Mondays from 11:30 am until Close.  And we will be adding Beer Battered Fish and Chips to our Specials line up every Sunday and Monday starting in July.

Tap List

Our website now has a fully updated list of our draft beers.  You can check it out at: https://westcoastbbqandbrew.com/beer/.  We are using Untappd to update the list so you now get the beer name, brewery name, style, ABV, brewery location and even a description if there is one on the site.  Look for the tap list to be updated regularly as we tap new beers.

Russian River, Citra x 2 and Smoked Prime Rib!

Hello West Coast Fans,

We have an incredible line up of beers over the next few weeks with lots of super strong IPAs headed your way.  There are still lots of Societe beers on tap from our huge tap take over this past Thursday.  The kitchen continues to crank out amazing food specials and we will be continuing our Friday night Smoked Prime Rib special for the foreseeable future.  Here are all of the delicious, drinkable details….

This Week

We are kicking the week off with some awesome taco specials.  In addition to our regular $3 Tacos we will be serving up Nickel Bacon Tacos and Grilled Ahi Tacos for just $4 each.  The Nickel Bacon is whole slab bacon that we put in the smoker and then chunk up like steak.  Look for these specials while they last both tonight and tomorrow night.

Humberto will also be serving up Clam Chowder in a bread bowl tonight, which should be the perfect way to keep yourself warm in this weather.  We’ll also have the Nickel Bacon BLT (super thick cut bacon), Unlce Bob’s Torta (Italian-style sub on Torta bread), an Eggplant Sandwich with Pesto and the Grilled Ahi Salad.  And there will be 50 cent wings and craft beer pitchers starting at just $12.  If it seems like a lot of good stuff for Monday, it is.  We are trying to run 5-6 specials every day now including 1-2 salads.  I try to post up the food specials most days on the Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/WestCoastBarbecueBrew/.

Tomorrow, Tuesday the 28th we cap our 5th Anniversary month with a very special keg – Russian River Blind Pig IPA.  It seems appropriate to finish the month with Temecula’s most famous beer, even if it is now brewed in Santa Rosa.  The beer will be on tap when we open at 11:30 am so  you can enjoy it at any point in the day.

Thursday, March 2nd we will tap the massive Hildegard Triple IPA from Benchmark Brewing (roughly 13.5%) along with kegs of Hop Chunks Double IPA and the brewery’s very tasty Brown Ale.  All three will be on tap by 4 pm on the 2nd and we might just sneak them on a little earlier.

This weekend we will be smoking up more Prime Rib.  We’ll have it as a dinner plate on Friday night and then serving up Prime Rib Sandwiches on Saturday all day long.  Saturday night our kitchen manager Humberto will be doing a Smoked Salmon dinner plate.  He smoked up some Salmon for Valentine’s Day and it was excellent.

Next Week

On Tuesday, March 7th we will be tapping Noble Citra Showers and I Love It IPA.  Noble was not distributing beer in San Diego for a little while, but they are back now and we have been lucky enough to get some of these very popular beers.  Hopefully we will have Noble beers more regularly on tap at West Coast throughout the year.

Then on Thursday the 9th we tap some true pub favorites from Kern River – Citra Double IPA and Hop Nookie Triple IPA alongside Thorn Street’s Brother Scotty’s Triple IPA.  All 3 of these beers will be on tap by 4 pm on the 9th.  These are all 5 gallon kegs and all strong beers so look for 5 and 10 oz pours of these special hoppy beers.

And then for next Friday, you guessed it, more Prime Rib.  Plus the kitchen will be serving up Smoked Flank Steak both Friday and Saturday.  Check the Facebook page next week for more details.

Looking Ahead

We will be serving up beer boiled Corned Beef for St. Patrick’s Day weekend starting Friday, March 17th.  We’ll have some Irish themed stouts on for the weekend and Nickel C.C. O’Neill’s Irish Red.  Look for Corned Beef plates, sandwiches and other specials all weekend long.

Some other upcoming food specials you can look forward to include pasta dishes, Smoked Meat Loaf and Chicken Parmesan.  And we will be hosting an Iron Fist tap takeover the week after St. Patrick’s Day on Thursday, March 23rd.

West Coast Holiday Hours and Upcoming Beers

Hello West Coast Patrons,

I have updates on our hours over the holidays along with some upcoming beers to look forward to.

The pub will be open normal hours today, Friday the 23rd.  We will then be closed Saturday and Sunday, December 24th and 25th.  West Coast will be opening early at Noon on Monday the 26th with a full day of college football bowl games.  In fact, there will pretty much be college football bowl games all week.

From Tuesday the 27th to Friday the 30th the pub will be open normal hours.  We will close just a little bit early on the 31st – 8:30 pm in the kitchen and 9 pm for the pub.  New Year’s Day we will be open normal hours and showing what I sincerely hope is not the final San Diego Chargers game.  The Bolts take on the Chiefs at 1:25 pm in the season finale having hopefully not allowed a win to Cleveland the week before.

We will be opening up early on Monday the 2nd as well – we are just finalizing plans as to when as we work with the staff for scheduling.  Right now, the plan is to open no later than 2 pm so that we can show the Rose Bowl between #9 USC and #5 Penn State that kicks off at 2 pm.  At 5:30 pm on the 2nd the Sugar Bowl will pit #14 Auburn v. #7 Oklahoma.

Beers and Bowls

We just tapped several great Rip Current beers last night including Java Storm Imperial Stout and Vanilla Storm Imperial Stout.  These coffee and vanilla versions of this fantastic stout are very different but both very tasty.  Knee Deep’s Breaking Bud just returned to the tap line up and look for Alpine Duet IPA to be on tap soon.

Next week we will have a few kegs from our friends at Kern River Brewing.  The JO (Just Outstanding) IPA and Shuttle Bunny Double IPA will both hit the taps on Thursday the 29th so that you can enjoy them through the weekend.  There will not be any NFL on the 29th, but we will get #12 Oklahoma State v. #10 Colorado in the Alamo Bowl at 6 pm.

Saturday the 31st is the College Football Playoff Semi-Final games.  At Noon it will be #4 Washington facing #1 Alabama in the Peach Bowl.  Then at 4 pm #3 Ohio State takes on #2 Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl.  The National Championship Game will be Monday, January 9th at 5 pm – nice how it just happens to be during our Pitcher, Wing and Taco night special, huh?

We have already started to plan some events for 2017.  Thursday, January 12th we will host a Bear Republic Night at the pub.  And we have several kegs stashed away for the pub’s 5th Anniversary in February.

Sad News

As many of you already know, West Coast Barbecue and Brew owner Larry Koger passed away last week from heart complications.  Everyone at the pub has been hit hard by the news but all are determined to keep the business going and moving forward.  Larry was the nicest person you could hope to meet.  And his child-like enthusiasm for good beer was always contagious.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family in this time of mourning.  He will be greatly missed.

In the short term, my wife Lindsey and I will be running the pub.  We own O’Brien’s Pub and Nickel Beer Company and we had a small stake in West Coast as we helped Larry open the place in 2012 and install the taps.  There will be changes in the year ahead, but we hope to honor Larry’s vision of West Coast as a great place to eat and drink among friends.

This past week I brewed Larry’s Place IPA both in honor of Larry and for the upcoming anniversary.  I made the beer for the 4th Anniversary and I had already talked to Larry about brewing it again for 2017.  It felt right to get it in the tank as soon as possible and I hope to have kegs down to the pub in early January.

I am sorry to leave you on such sad news, but please raise a glass to Larry and a life well lived.

Father’s Day Weekend Celebration and special offer for newsletter readers

Happy Hour, Sunday $10.00 Pitchers and our schedule Our happy hour and Sunday pitcher specials are being well-received. Only $3.50 for any regularly priced craft beer and only $4.50 for strong and special drafts during Happy Hour. Happy hour prices are Friday and Saturday night between 9-11pm and Tuesday -Thursday from 8-10pm. On Sundays you can get any regularly priced craft beer for only $10.00.  Our weekly schedule is Friday and Saturday, 11:30am -11pm, Sunday 11:30am -7pm, Tuesday – Thursday, 4-10pm and closed on Monday. Our kitchen is open until 10pm Friday and Saturday, until 7pm on Sunday and open until 9pm Tuesday – Thursday.

San Diego International Beer Festival The San Diego International Beer Festival will be Friday through Sunday, June 22nd to 24th, at the San Diego County Fair.  Tom has been working hard to plan a great event and he expects more than 300 beers to be poured this year. Grand Opening this Weekend, May 18 -20

Tap Tower in place & Grand Opening

Hello Beer and BBQ fans,

I know you have been asking so here is the first newsletter and the latest news on West Coast BBQ & Brew. This is just a brief note to let you know what is going on because so many of you have been asking for more information and details. The remodel is underway and the 28 Tap Tower is set in place. I am being told that in the next few days we will be able to start serving draft beer. Thank you to Paul “Fix-It”, Keith, and Dave the Taptower guy, for all the great work getting us ready. I have spent the last week getting reacquainted with a paint brush and it is starting to come together. We are currently serving food and our beef ribs, spare ribs, and babybacks are coming out of the smoker just the way we want them. Our wood pit smoker is a cool piece of equipment with massive racks that gently rotate allowing us to slow cook our pork butt and beef clod overnight for 13 -14 hours at lower temptatures so the meat is tender and juicy.
